Cowichan Pipes & Drums

We are very lucky to have the Cowichan Pipes & Drums playing in this year’s festival.

Participating in the Grande Parade which starts at 11pm on Saturday July 16th, the band will also be the star act in the military tattoo on the same day.

Electric guitar and electric bagpipes have also been known to feature in the band’s performances!

A number of our members are Scots or have Scottish ancestory.

Our motto is Ceol As An Tir Blath, which is Gaelic for Music from the Warm Land and our tartan is Drummond of Perth.

Behind the scenes

Woop Woop! It’s Friday!

Sound and ScienceImage of Hope KingAnother top line-up this Friday with a range of fantastic acts playing live from Charles Hoey Park and the City Square Stage.

The day kicks off with Marty Jones taking to the stage in Charles Hoey Park at noon, followed by the Cowichan Valley’s very own Hope King.

Mid-afternoon sees Scott McGill take to the stage (at 2pm) and then we will be treated to another Student and Teacher Showcase, thanks to the Cowichan Valley Music Teachers Association.

At 5pm we invite anyone who wants to get up, perform in front of a live audience and improve their skills to join in with our open mic session and we’ll follow this up with recordings of a variety of Canadian artists before celtic folk phenomenon Jane’s Way take to the stage (at 7pm).

Meanwhile, at the City Square Stage

You are spoiled for choice today as at 6.30pm over on the City Square Stage Tropic Mayhem treat us to another set of chilled out vibes with their distinctive, retro-ish beach music.

The Led Zeppelin Show (credit - www.theledzeppelinshow.com)Close on their heels at 7.00pm are local act Sound and Science (presented by Planet Clean). Their progressive and meaningful sound is unmissable to be sure to come downtown and enjoy.

Finishing the evening we go back in time with Led Zeppelin tribute band The Led Zeppelin Show at 8pm. The outfits, the music, everything is just as it was back in the good old 1970s.

This will be a highlight of the evening for many and we would encourage you to come along and show your support. Friday’s simply don’t get any better than this!

Emily Spiller

Come down and listen to this incredible talent at the Charles Hoey Park tonight at 7:30pm.

Said to be the next Adele and the new Duffy you have simply got to take a look!

Born on Vancouver Island, Emily has now toured in Canada, China, Australia, & New Zealand.

Her songs have already featured in two independent Canadian films and we are delighted to have her here in Duncan.

A Musical Showcase

Logo of the Cowichan Valley Music Teachers Association (CVMTA)Starting at 3pm today (July 4th, 2011) the Cowichan Valley Music Teachers Association will be live at Charles Hoey Park with their Student and Teacher Showcase.

The Association is an informal, friendly group of music teachers facilitating a variety of musical opportunities for students.

The talents of teachers and students alike will be showcased throughout the festival as they will be performing most weekdays at 3pm. Please come along to the park to show your appreciation and enjoy some great music.

Naomi Payan

This year’s festival will see several appearances by local singer Naomi Payan. The Duncan based folk-rock singer made it into the final stage of the Cowichan Folk Guild’s songwriting contest this year and will be performing a number of her latest songs at the festival.

In the past five years Naomi began to write and perform her own material at open mic contests in Scotland, France and Canada and hasn’t looked back.

I enjoy lots of different types of music, but some of my favourites are Fiona Apple, Jeff Buckley and Elbow.

As a full time mom to describe Naomi as busy is an understatement, especially as she is also currently recording new accoustic work with a friend. [Read more...]
