What began as impromptu jamming by some like-minded folk soon evolved into what is now known as The Screaming Room.
This band, consisting of Evan Westre, Jordan Dack and their wives Nicole Westre and Michelle Dack, is a celebration of creativity.
Coming from diverse, musical backgrounds, the members leave no musical stone unturned. For the first 16 weeks of 2011, The Screaming Room wrote and recorded one complete song per week ranging stylistically from folk to spoken word and everything in between.
This group demonstrates that a holistic love of creativity can take us to some fascinating places.
Here is a teaser of amazing father & son duo The Big Mess. The clip includes some of the performance from last Monday & today. They will be back on July 25th at the Charles Hoey Park @ 2pm and they will wrap up with the Summer Festival at the Duncan Garage Showroom. A must see, they put on quite a show!
Very much a centrepiece of the summer festival, the streets of Duncan will be lined with people young and old as the parade progresses through the streets.
Town celebrities in crazy costumes, fire trucks and police cars, marching bands and … just lots of fun!
The fun doesn’t stop there. At 2pm military precision combines with the spine tingling skirl of the bagpipes as the Military Tattoo gets underway, featuring the Cowichan Pipes & Drums amongst the performers.
Who is Duncan’s most talented?

Hosted by the inimitable Glaucia (pictured, right) the competition has the following stages:
The venue is Charles Hoey Park and the sun is (almost) always shining!
Your chance to win!
There are some fantastic prizes, too:

In addition to the Saturday Farmer’s Market the town’s tattoo artists will be present for a Show and Tell Competition for anyone with ink – this will be ongoing throughout the day from 10am until 4pm.
On the musical front, Vancouver Island duo Mitch and the Barroness (Elissa Barron pictured, right) kick things off at noon on Saturday with their distinctive southern fried blues.
Get a sneak preview of what to expect by checking out some of their music on their MySpace page.
The day we’ve all been waiting for, Sunday, July 10th is Children’s Day! Bouncy castles, merry-go-rounds, led pony treks … it’s fantastic fun for the entire family.
Taking place in Charles Hoey Park a snow fence will be erected around the perimeter to make the area as safe as possible for your children.
On Sunday we will also be treated to the Penny the Owl Show (with thanks to Island Savings) and another fantastic performance by Leela the Poi Queen.
There is so much to look forward to you simply can’t afford to miss it. Family friendly, loads of fun stuff for kids, great entertainment for everyone … and it’s all free!
This year’s festival will see several appearances by local singer Naomi Payan. The Duncan based folk-rock singer made it into the final stage of the Cowichan Folk Guild’s songwriting contest this year and will be performing a number of her latest songs at the festival.
Naomi enjoyed a musical upbringing and went on to perform both in choirs and as a backing vocalist.
In the past five years Naomi began to write and perform her own material at open mic contests in Scotland, France and Canada and hasn’t looked back.
I enjoy lots of different types of music, but some of my favourites are Fiona Apple, Jeff Buckley and Elbow. Naomi Payan
As a full time mom to describe Naomi as busy is an understatement, especially as she is also currently recording new accoustic work with a friend. Read the full post…
